These buttons were made to go along with the headboard that we built. Check out the DIY headboard here. The material that I bought for the headboard upholstery was too thick to follow the regular steps given in the DIY button kit that I bought. So, had to use some improvisations. You don’t need to follow below steps if your fabric is not thick as mine did.
Materials used:
- Button kit – I am not sure what size did I get. choose whichever suits your project.
- Fabric
- Needle + thread
- Super Glue
- Super thin fabric or paper (I used gift wrapping sheet)
STEP-1:
Cut the fabric to the size of the stencil provided with the kit. As I have said before, my fabric is too thick to work with. so, first I made the button with a gift wrapping sheet. i.e cut the sheet as per the size in given stencil and follow the steps given in the kit to make the button. I did this because, the button’s backing dint seat inside the button cover tight enough without a fabric. so, I had to prepare the button like so with a paper.
STEP-2: Now sew the cut fabric along the end like in the image.
STEP-3: Apply glue on the button as well as on the inner side of the fabric. then place the button inside the fabric.
STEP-4:
Apply glue on the rear side of the button as well. Now carefully and slowly pull both the ends of the thread together to one side, so that the fabric ends will converge into the button. While you pu
ll the thread out, with your other hand press the fabric over the applied glue and hold it for few seconds for it to set. I said to pull the threads carefully because there is lot of chance for the thread to cut off and you have to repeat it all over. I did it couple of times and its frustrating. I dint apply glue for first few buttons and it was hard to just secure with thread. I figured only later that glue gets the work done quick & easy than expected.
STEP-3: Then secure the loose end of the thread by sewing through the fabric and the button loop until you feel that its sturdy enough.
Repeat for all your buttons !
