DESIGN: Take out a paper & color pencils or a tab (if you like to sketch digitally) and do a rough sketch. This will give an idea on the shape and color composition that you prefer. Then figure out the size of your wall hang. I mean the overall width and height. With that information, you can get a rough length of each color you would like to use. I have few helpful pointers below to help you.
USEFUL TIPS BEFORE you start this DIY on Giant wall hanging decor
Type of yarn:
Any type is fine, as long as you like the color. I have used acrylic yarns in this project (except that peach color I used). They are a little cheaper, but I the colors I wanted only on acrylic. You could try this with any kind of rope or yarn you get your hands on. They come in cotton, nylon, wool, etc..
Yarn thickness:
In my opinion, thicker the yarn is, you get more coverage and you can finish the project faster. Or you could mix and match, like I did in this DIY. The peach color I used are 9mm thick, dark grey is 6.5mm thick and all the other colors are 5mm thick. Mixing different sizes and texture is also fun to work with and the outcomes will amaze you. It took about 2 to 3 days to complete this project.
How much yarn will you need?
It actually depends upon the size of your project and how thick of yarn are you going to use. In my project, halfway I ran out of yarn and bought extra rolls to complete. Also I did two layers on every color. So, buy extra to avoid multiples runs to the store. Like I said before, I used approximately 1100 yards of yarn for this 4ft wide and 3ft height wall hang.
To give you an idea of yarn quantity from what I used :
How to choose the color combination?
If you are confused about what color combination to go, I suggest you to visit the store or look online for these yarns that comes in different colors in same roll. If you see something you like, then buy the full rolls to match those combination of colors.

Step – 1
Stain or paint the wood strips. If you are ok with the natural wood look, then just finish it with any clear sealer. I stained mine with 3 coats of ebony.
Step – 2
Unwrap the yarn roll and cut them to required lengths. Whatever length you might need your art piece to be, add 5 to 6 inches extra to your cut. Also, you should consider the width of the wood strip.
The cutting process is pretty repetitive and extensive. So, to make the process easy, take any thick cardboard or foamboard and cut it to the required length of the yarn. If the board is not long enough, attach two pieces together with painter’s tape. Then take one end of the yarn and wrap it around the board and make a knot to secure the yarn. Then continue to wrap the yarn around the board until the yarn ball is completely unwrapped. Or until you have the desired amount of yarn. Before cutting, tape the yarn along with the board on one side and cut it. Repeat the process for all the colors you need.
Step – 3
Next, we are going to glue the yarn one by one on the wood strip. First, straighten them out and lay individually near you. Then start to apply glue and press down to secure it in position. You could use any glue that you have. I am using hot glue as it will set quickly than others.
Step – 4
Layer the finished strips and attach them together with wood spacers on either sides and center. Apply wood glue and clamp them together until it dries. Remember to touch up the stain color on the spacers too. Finally, install hanging hardware on the rear.
Step – 5
Now, hang the decor on wall for this next step. Its time to trim the yarn to desired shape and height. Optional : Before trimming, you can steam the yarn if its wrinkly.
Next part is just like giving a haircut. Comb through the yarn with your fingers and then cut. Or you could also tape the yarn and then cut with that reference. Take it slow until you are happy with the pattern.
Note: The yarn can be a little stretchy. So, when you comb them try not to pull too much.
Well, that is all. DIY Giant wall hanging decor with yarn.
